The Short of It

  • The Milwaukee Police Department put together a refreshing design that better reflected the value of a city service.
  • 99% of government websites are no pleasure to visit or navigate.
  • Government sites are an opportunity to turn bureaucracy into a thing of beauty.

I came across this website for the Milwaukee Police Department and thought it was a refreshing to see a design that so adequately reflected the value of a city service. Yes, doing this probably took some more time than dropping everything into some generic template, but I think the resulting design will not only help create a more positive impression in the eyes of the community, but help build internal morale as well - everyone loves to look good.

Chris Jacobs, the Executive Creative Director for Cramer-Krasselt Milwaukee, the firm who lead the pro-bono site redesign, said, "Truth is, 99% of government websites are no pleasure to visit or navigate, with key information scattered or buried. But [Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn] gave us a rare opportunity: the chance to turn bureaucracy into a thing of beauty." (via Creativity)

Now if we could just work on the other 99% of government websites.
