When Data Drives Knowledge

The Short of It

  • The common phrase about management is that it's about what gets measured.
  • A new perspective is that it's not only what gets measured, but what gets properly presented.
  • Design can help creative a stronger narrative and story that is more easily understood.

Peter Drucker once remarked that, "What gets measured gets managed". To that, Hans Rosling might reply, "What gets measured, and properly presented, gets managed." It's only when data is turned into something meaningful, and for must of us that means visual, that data shifts from simply being information to one of knowledge that allows for active introspection, positive and growth. For this video, Rosling turned 120,000 data points into a four minute conversation about the world around us. And he did it while keeping it interesting.  Count me in. If you want to know more about one of Foreign Policy's top 100 global thinkers (and amateur sword swallower), check out his foundation called Gapminder, which lists its mission as "Unveiling the beauty of statistics for a fact based world view." He also has a brilliant TED talk on population growth using IKEA boxes.
