Walmart recently announced the changing of its legal name to more accurately reflect the chain’s growing emphasis on its e-commerce and online sectors. For 48 years, the company has been trading with the legal name Wal-Mart Stores, which will change to Walmart Inc. on February 1st 2018. Doug McMillon, Walmart president and CEO, explained that today’s customers do not only shop in store, but online and via the Walmart app as well. “While our legal name is used in a limited number of places,” he admitted, “we felt it was best to have a name that was consistent with the idea that you can shop with us however you like as a customer.” McMillon also acknowledges that the change reflects a return to the company’s roots as when Sam Walton opened the first store in 1962, the name on the front of the building was simply “Walmart.”
